Reading Juice - Funny Poems for Children

I created Reading Juice in 2009 when I was in-between jobs and looking for ways to expand my then limited experience and skillset. After becoming familiar with content management systems, through my first online writing jobs, I realised that a basic knowledge of HTML and web design would be useful as a writer for the web. Armed with a chunky HTML book I'd been given some years before, notepad, and a web browser I set about teaching myself how to make website. Reading Juice was the result.

Inevitably my first attempts were crude and cringe-worthy. However, after buying some webspace, working out how to set up a content management system, and continually trying to improve the site I managed to create what is now one of the highest ranking children's poetry sites on Google.

The content was initially made up of things I'd written at university, poems and some short stories, and some stuff which was written quickly and just for fun because I thought no one was reading it. When I realised that people were reading some of the content (after setting up Google Analytics) I gradually added to it, pruned a lot, and decided to focus on improving the light-hearted verses I'd developed a knack for writing.

In addition to this I experimented with adding my own illustrations which I've also honed over the years – now drawing them by hand, scanning them in, and then turning them into a nice clean vector graphic.

The Mountain of Conclusions - from Reading Juice

Reading Juice was also a great opportunity to experiment with SEO. Children's poetry is a low competition area so it wasn't too difficult to raise my rank but I've continually tweaked my keywords, built strong backlinks, and more recently made the site mobile-friendly.

My aim is to keep adding to Reading Juice whenever I have a strong idea for a poem, and always work to improve the content I add to it, creating what will hopefully be a well-crafted and expansive collection of children's poems.
