PanoRAMMa Project

In October 2014 I approached the marketing and design team at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum with an idea to create a photographic image of the front of RAMM, creating one image from multiple images. After some experiments at street level we gained access to the first and second floor shop windows facing the museum - the shops that make it impossible to take a single photograph of its front. After taking several photos from each window I selected the best ones and combined them in Photoshop to make the image below.

View of Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) from the front

The process was more complicated than creating a panoramic photo with images taken from a single point, something which can be done in seconds (as opposed to hours) on a smartphone or with image stitching software like Microsoft’s ICE. I wanted to create an image that wasn’t distorted, that would look like the kind of normal photo you’d be able to take if you could stand far enough away from the museum. Out of the 452 images I captured I used five for the main body of the museum, around 30 in total were used to get it all looking right.

John Hayward’s architectural drawing in RAMM’s Case Histories gallery was my only point of reference for accuracy and working out where all the lines should sit. As the puzzle pieces came together it was interesting to see how little RAMM has changed externally since its conception.

Big thanks to Toot Garook, Whitton & Laing, 99p Store and Brody’s for being really helpful and letting us use their windows.
